One of the lasting consequences of the pandemic is that going to work is going to be a fundamentally different experience from what it was before the lockdown. The office is going to change dramatically. More importantly, even those fortunate to still have jobs may never return to an office at all, or only occasionally. Within the next couple of years up to 30% of people may be working remotely. This has huge implications for commercial real estate, public transport, even entire cities and states. Ever the optimist, I see the benefits of these precipitous changes far outweighing the costs, certainly from an environmental point of view if nothing else. Even those people who do still go somewhere to work will benefit from significantly less traffic congestion and pollution.
