Some concepts of time are human constructs and some are physics. We have 7 days in a week, 24 hours in a day, 60 seconds in a minute for no set reason. But years, days & months are set ( roughly!) by the world and we work around them. It's odd how we don't tend to distinguish between arbitrary and fixed. Soon we're in the same place (ish) we were a year ago & while it's not a remotely new idea,the power of a narrative seems especially compelling these days. Stocks rise/fall based on stories, we seem to seek only evidence to support preexisting beliefs & we act like tribes reinforcing each other's feelings.It's rude not to For almost everyone 2020 was awful. For almost everyone there are enough data points to support a narrative of progress,of optimism & of hope for 2021. They may not feel big, they may be harder to see,they may not be in the press,they may not be easy to believe,it may feel wrong. I'm not suggesting people smile because it can trick you into making you happy, or that we live in denial, or that we celebrate ignorance or ignore tragedy, or act dangerously. I'm not suggesting people do anything, I'm not a motivational speaker and I can't stand telling people what to do.
