A mea culpa/piece of advice because it's important to remember reactions are just as important as actions.  A few weeks ago, I had a run-in in a Facebook Group I belonged to that is an extension of a newsletter that I subscribe to (and have from its beginning - I'm an avid reader and advocate). An admin in the group made a slightly snide comment about something I shared. My reaction? I deleted the share, left the group, and wrote a thinly veiled, yet nasty “business lesson” piece on Medium about the encounter. To be clear, the comment by the admin shouldn’t have happened and he has since apologized. But what I did in the wake of that shouldn’t have happened either. At Netflix , if you had an issue with someone and complained to your boss about them, the immediate question was, “What did they say when you spoke to them about it?” This was a not-so-subtle way to say ‘deal with your situation properly, like an adult.’ In hindsight, I realize that I failed to live up to that goal. What I should have done was reach out, told him how his comments came across and given him a chance to react. Instead I “took my toys and went home.” Not a good look. So, don’t react immediately. Think, then address the situation at the right level. You’ll be glad you did. #lessons #communication #eq …see more
