Paywalls are an anathema for journalists -- they for cut you off from the Internet's greatest gift -- access to global distribution for free. The Second Law of Online Media states: Content is infinitely scalable. Others will carry it and evangelize it. But that won't happen with a paywall. Google and Facebook don't have paywalls -- yet they advise newspaper and magazine publishers to build paywalls(!) which means that the publishers cut themselves off from the single best thing about the Internet -- instant distribution at global scale.
