Don’t We All Want To Be a VIP? VIPs get the best of everything—whether it’s the best table at a restaurant, or best seats at a ball game. And when it comes to healthcare, VIPs get the best treatment, doctors, therapies and monitoring. ‘VIP-ness’ is a feature of American medicine. Major hospitals throughout the country have private spaces for celebrities, the super-rich and the influential. These VIPs get the most vigorous care and therapies . . . even when there isn’t enough medicine—or even hospital beds—for the rest of us ‘regular Americans.’ In my days caring for patients, every one of them wanted desperately to be treated as a VIP.
