Recapturing Impulsiveness: Big Food Wants You Back There was a huge surge in sales of packaged food in mid-March including loads of snack foods like chips and cookies—and the Big Food Companies want to keep it that way. Data from the research firm Nielsen that tracked Americans’ grocery buying from March to May bore this out. Campbell’s reaped a 93 percent increase in sales of its canned soup, General Mills, breakfast cereal jumped to 37 percent in the third week of April and Americans continue to by 51 percent more frozen waffles, pancakes and French toast from Kellogg’s. And so on. Tricky advertising will continue since the Companies are on the record: They want to ‘Recapture Impulsiveness.’ Which means getting the consumer to purchase fundamentally unhealthy and non-valuable foods. Don’t do it. Don’t allow these times of uncertainty get under your skin—literally. Highly processed foods are called ‘food stuff’ for a reason—because they are not real food. And these fake foods will ‘up’ your blood pressure, weight, and cholesterol if they become part of a daily diet. Eating well is another way to protect your health.
