The only time I saw U. S. Representative John Lewis in person was shortly after I moved to Washington, DC in September 1994. He was walking down the street near one of the House Office Buildings, and I lived three blocks from the Capitol in a posh townhouse. In that moment, I had the most powerful sense of connection and gratitude to him. I had never expected to live in DC, or to work as a reporter for a national news service, or live in a fancy neighborhood. But I knew I was there because of the tireless work and extraordinary sacrifices made by people like him. I didn't cross over to meet him because the emotions were so strong, I was afraid I'd start crying. Now I wish I had thanked him. It hurts so much that he's gone, but after all that good trouble he caused, he's earned a rest. And maybe he's up there now, chopping it up with Dr. King and Rev.
