For #FlashbackFriday , remembering that time back in July of 2007 when I had to cross my arms to keep from visibly trembling as I led a journalism training at the Pagak refugee camp in Northern #Uganda . It was probably the first time many of the men sitting in that circle had ever heard a woman speak in a setting like that without being given permission. Forget about LEADING the whole event. It was also only the second time I'd ever accepted a #journalism leadership role. The first was when I was President of the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) back in 1997. Now, I'm not saying that belonging to #JAWS can prepare you to work in a post-civil war zone, but let's just say it didn't hurt. Twelve years later, I'm coaching reporters in eight countries using Google Translate, Zoom, WhatsApp, Slack--by any means necessary. Now I know why I fought my way through the fear in that refugee camp.
