When I wrote yesterday that people like United States Rep. John Lewis had paved my path to an editor's desk in #WashingtonDC , I had no idea just how literal that statement was. But when my brother Peter Jones visited the about-to-close Newseum recently, he found an image that has moved me to my core. It is a picture of then college student John Lewis, who was a member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Inc participating in a #CivilRights Movement protest in my hometown of Cairo, Illinois. The caption reads, "This recruitment poster for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee features activist John Lewis, left, and two other students, protesting at an all-white swimming pool in Cairo, Illinois in 1962. Courtesy of The University of Southern Mississippi McCain Library and Archives." I was a one-year-old in 1962. The historic #MarchOnWashington occurred in 1963. My ticket was stamped and paid for in moments like these. Rest assured, Rep. Lewis, that the debt is being paid forward. #OnTheShouldersofGiants #JohnLewis #CairoIllinois #socialjustice #nonviolentprotest #equalrights #AfricanAmericans …see more
