Walmart stepped forcefully into the national gun debate on Tuesday, saying it would stop selling ammunition that can be used in military-style assault rifles, would discourage its customers from openly carrying guns in its stores and would call on Congress to increase background checks and consider a new assault rifle ban. As a public health advocate, I say ‘Bravo’ to Walmart for living their values—this will cost them profit and customers. To create any real change in public opinion always requires someone or some company to step forward and ‘be the first.’ Equally (or perhaps more important) is ‘the first follower,’ and we already have that in Krogan’s grocery store also indicating they will restrict their customers from open carry.
