Find it Hard to Concentrate at Work? Maybe You Are Neurodivergent. Ever wondered why its so hard to concentrate at work? Two reasons: firstly, cubicles and open spaces are noisy, distracting and communal-encouraging “drop-in” meetings and interruptions. And secondly because not everyone is ‘wired’ to handle so much chatter and unpredictability. Neurodivergence describes the variations in the ways our brains function, and encompasses people on the autism spectrum and people with ADHD or dyslexia. The term has been expanding to include those with anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD—anything that makes a person think a bit differently. And this can make typical work spaces and work flow challenging. However there are adjustments in a work setting that can be made, include allowing more time working from home, adjusting neurodivergent workers start time and end time. Allowing for this flexibility in scheduling and letting people do what they need to do to cope with noise or environment—without judgement. The unemployment rate for people receiving public mental health services is approximately 80 percent.”
