What can I say...except that I called it 26 years ago. I knew back then that Jemele Hill had the spark, boldness, dynamism and writing talent to be a star...and she was only a 16 year old Detroit high school student at the time! Today, I have the privilege of saying I was one of her first journalism mentors, and that Jemele is now my friend. And she is also the 2018 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Journalist of the Year. She'll receive her award at this year's NABJ Convention in August--which just happens to be in Detroit. I plan to be in there to witness that moment.
