In 2015, then Nation Media Group health reporter Eunice Kilonzo wrote a compelling story about a man named Alex Madaga, who spent 18 hours in the back of a Nairobi ambulance bleeding in his brain because the city's Kenyatta National Hospital did not have an ICU bed for him. I lived in Nairobi then, and remember being chilled to the bone envisioning myself needing emergency care. I was lucky during my 8 years in #Kenya, and through God's grace never had a medical scare. But Kenya's fragile health care system is a nightmare across all socio-economic sectors. Madaga's eventual death, and the harrowing impact on the young emergency tech who cared for him, led to today's Nairobi premiere of "18 Hours," a feature film by Irũngũ Houghton and his creative partners. Houghton's passion for communication, policy development and social justice compelled him to collaborate on the film, to amplify Madaga's tragic story with the goal of improving health care services and access in Kenya. I look forward to eventually seeing "18 Hours," and following the impact I hope it will make. #18HoursFilm #Africa #healthcare #globalhealth #globaldevelopment
