Why Are Animals Still Used by the FDA? Dogs and primates are still used as disposable test subjects, confined to small pens, in labs, subjected to all kinds of experiments. I’m very (very) happy to learn that the FDA is making important progress to find alternative approaches to studying and testing new drugs and vaccines. While I understand the historic role animals have had as “lab rats,” there are simply too many options available now (like sophisticated computer-based modeling) to warrant the use of animals in scientific experimentation. If we view ourselves as a kind and decent Society, then we must support the move towards banning animal-testing. If animals could talk, what do you think they’d want? Go ask your own dog or cat how they might feel about being poked and prodded and kept in a pen their whole lives!
