I say ‘So Long, Sayonara and Adios’ to Skilled Nursing Facilities. One-in-three patients in skilled nursing facilities suffered a medication error, infection or some other type of harm related to their treatment—much higher medical error rates than hospitals. And 60% of the errors are preventable according to physician reviews. The injuries and deaths were caused by substandard treatment, inadequate monitoring, delays or the failure to provide needed care (According to CMS) With over 70% of the Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) operating as for-profit, and with pressure from company owners to maximize revenues, it should come as no surprise that ‘word on the street’ is to stay away from SNF unless there is a very rare exception. (Yes, I know there are some ‘good ones’ out there by data will tell you it’s about 5% of the market.) The rise in post-acute options like Home Care is hopeful, and promises more personalized, technology-enabled, timely care...all while in the comforts of home.
