I flew in and out of Juba 5 times between August of 2014 and July of 2015 as an editor for Voice of America , and I'm only just starting to fully appreciate how much harm I could have experienced. I used to think my African DNA, coupled with my American accent and the stern, Mama Hen demeanor I can invoke at a moment's notice, provided me with just enough cover to navigate through Juba. But in hindsight I could have been arrested or worse at any moment.
