Oops Wrong Conclusion: This is Why Its Hard to Advance Medicine and Public Health Remember when “low-fat and high-carb” diets were all the rage, only to be proved (years later), to lead to weight gain, diabetes and heat disease—in part because of all the sugar added to processed foods? Or remember the buzz that oatmeal will stave-off heart disease? (Or eating only meat will not cause heart disease?!!) And I can’t keep up—is coffee good or bad for us?? Well now we can add the lowly and pure aspirin to the list of things that don’t actually help stave-off heart disease (assuming you are just fine). With so much hyping by the food industry, academic research centers and wanna-be food celebrities pushing ‘nutrition’ and wellness, it is almost impossible to figure out what’s actually ‘good for you’ (and I mean from a longitudinal, epidemiological, medical-evidentiary manner...). Selected Excerpt: “The message for the public is that healthy older people should not begin taking aspirin. “If you don’t need it, don’t start it,” Dr. McNeil said.”
