Culture Eats Consumerism for Lunch While ‘Consumerism’ is all the range in healthcare, moving beyond the slogans to the real-world of strategy development and implementation—and measurement—is still in its infancy. Why? Even though many technologies are mature enough to demonstrate real value, getting people within organizations to change from their old ways is hard. The biggest challenges to innovation is not the technical aspect of intraoperability or, realizing a return on investment, but rather on the necessary adoption, implementation and change management that goes hand-in-glove with innovation. I do a lot of change management so I consider myself to be an “Organizational Culturalist.” As an Organizational Culturalist, I function like a medical anthropologist helping organizations develop and implement technology adoption roadmaps. If ‘culture’ is the biggest barrier, then it’s time to think of culture like anthropologists rather than technologists.
