BREAKING: Email is the curse of the modern worker. ...alright, so it's not exactly breaking news that email can be a nightmare, but did you know there's actually research to prove it? A study published in the International Journal of Information Management found office workers took an average of 64 seconds after checking email to reorient themselves and get back to work. Not only is email a source of constant distraction, but studies find that about half the time we spend on email is an utter waste of time. But for most of us, our jobs depend on it. It's so ingrained into our daily work that giving it up could threaten our livelihood. So here's one step I take to manage my inbox: Whenever I reply to an email, I ask myself, “When’s the LATEST this person needs to see this reply?” Then, I use the “send later” function in my email to deliver the message at the right time. By clicking just one extra button before sending, the email is off my plate but is held back from being delivered to the recipient until the predetermined time I selected. Fewer emails sent per day results in fewer emails sent back per day. It also protects our nights and weekends from emails that can wait until later.
