The United States is going through a loneliness epidemic. Seriously. • Over 35 million Americans live alone -- a share of the population that’s been steadily rising over the past few decades. • One study from Cigna found that Gen Z was the loneliest generation and that 2 in 5 Americans sometimes or always feel isolated from others. The coronavirus pandemic and social distancing have only made the problem worse. This is also important to remember because research has shown that loneliness is as detrimental to our health as smoking and obesity. And so why does this problem exist? A hint: It’s not about social media. If anything, social media is a symptom of this disease, not the cause. The real reason loneliness has become so prevalent is that we have not done a good job of making time for our relationships. Right now, we give our relationships whatever scraps are left over. We might spend a few minutes with our loved ones here and there and we might call a friend up every once in a while. If we want to combat this problem, we have to make time for the people that matter most.
