In Silicon Valley, there’s something called a “leaky bucket business.” Users go in, users leak out. Back in the late-2000s, I saw this all the time. A company would pop up out of nowhere and overnight, they’d have millions of users. Some of these companies would succeed and build sustainable business models, but most wouldn’t. They’d have tons of users, but they couldn’t retain them for very long. It was around this time when I realized exactly how important it was to hook users to healthy habits.
