Is technology making us more distracted than ever before? Before I answer that, let me tell you a quick story. When I was an undergraduate at Emory University, the internet was still new (and slow) and there was no such thing as apps. This was years before the first smartphone ever came out. And even back then, I’d often get distracted. A friend might have come up to me while I was studying and asked me something like, “Do you want to play a quick game of ping pong?” It was never just a quick game. We would get sidetracked for hours. Distraction is nothing new. Plato talked about it 2,500 years ago. Yes, games, apps, and technology are designed to be engaging -- but the problem of distraction isn’t new. It’s been around as long as we have. Which is why in order to stay productive, we can’t be “blamers” or “shamers.” We can’t blame tech or shame ourselves for getting distracted. We have to be “claimers”. While the world’s problems aren’t your fault, managing them is your responsibility.
