Are your kids getting enough time for free play? Free play is time a child has to interact with other children on their own -- without the watchful gaze of parents, coaches, and teachers.. It's self-directed and an end in itself, rather than part of some organized activity. It's a method kids use to learn their “place” in the world. It’s a magical time where kids learn how the world works and that it doesn't revolve around them. Nowadays, time for play is at an all-time low. Today, you don’t hear kids playing around the neighborhood. Kids don’t have an opportunity to go to the park and run around without being protected and monitored 24/7. This is especially true with the outbreak of the coronavirus. But here’s the silver lining: we can use technology to enable free play. Video conferencing with their friends allows children to connect while safely social distancing. My daughter plays cards, makes origami, or even builds Legos with her friends over Facetime. We can use technology to facilitate free play by making time for it in our kids’ lives. Have your kids had enough free play lately?
