It’s incredibly easy to have negative associations with advancements in technology -- especially around distraction. “Social media has us more distracted than ever before.” “Big companies have hijacked our attention.” If you find yourself falling into his line of thinking, it’s important to remember developments in technology don’t happen in a vacuum. We are currently in one of the safest times in American history. We’re experiencing record lows for truancy, drug use, murder, you name it. It’s no coincidence that this prosperity coincides with advancements in technology. And think about it, if social media or smartphones disappeared tomorrow, would that eliminate distraction entirely? Would we automatically become more productive? Of course not! More than anything, discussions around the role of tech require nuance.
