This is a great illustration of how significant the cultural transformation with digital health is. Lancet Digital Health published an editorial addressing the issue of race to end health inequalities. They stated that racial and gender bias represent a significant problem in digital health, and even digital health approaches have contributed to these disparities by not considering race or ethnicity. "For example, melanoma diagnostic apps trained on images of white skin have difficulty detecting cancerous skin lesions in darker skin. Even failing to sufficiently account for variables that are correlated with race, such as health-care expenditure, can create a wedge between health needs and care received. When race clearly plays a causative role in health outcomes it should be incorporated into digital health approaches to prevent bias." And here, at pointing to a serious flaw, science stopped so far. What practical ideas would you give us and Lancet to fight racial injustice in digital health?
