As a child, I was taught, "Whoever takes a life is considered a destroyer of the whole world. Whoever saves a life is considered to have saved the whole world." This was my grandfather's interpretation of a passage in the Talmud (a book of rabbinic discussions about Jewish law, ethics, etc.). He was a Depression Era doctor, and from his perspective, any untimely death meant the world would be deprived of a righteous soul or a beloved child or parent or maybe even the next potential Mozart or Einstein. He worked his entire life trying to help others.
