During my talk in Lisbon to diabetes patients, I described the concept of the empowered patient and what patient design means. I emphasized how patients like them should influence physicians and policy makers. After my talk, a diabetes blogger asked me a question about what I say to my peer physicians when I talk about this concept. I told her that I say the same but I also describe the concept of the empowered physician which we presented in a JMIR paper. "We argue that patient empowerment, the spread of digital health, the biopsychosocial-digital approach, and the disappearance of the ivory tower of medicine lead to a new role for physicians.
