Digital health is a cultural transformation. That’s a key message I regularly address in my keynotes and also a basis of The Medical Futurist Institute’s research on the paradigm shift currently taking place in healthcare. Let me demonstrate it through an example. Brennan Spiegel, MD, MSHS and the VR clinical research team at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have been doing a tremendous job assessing the health benefits of virtual reality. They have been experimenting with the technology for several years and found a significant drop in pain scores in case of VR therapies. What strikes me in their story is that the immersive, multi-sensory environments had a more significant impact on patients when medical professionals participated in the therapy as a guide, introducing the technology gradually and coaching the patient along the session.
