Trauma has tentacles that wrap themselves around survivors. That statement expresses this reality: school shootings have lasting effects on the survivors: students, teachers, families, communities. For proof, we need first to recognize the traumatic symptomology that survivors show. Consider this article and the LA Middle School teacher's continuing struggle with a school shooting in which she was injured. https://lnkd.in/eAbHYVY This article and the teacher's symptomology are also why anniversaries (commemorations) of a trauma need to be planned thoughtfully, recognizing that the impact of trauma remains long after the actual incident. With the upcoming Parkland shooting anniversary on Feb. 14, we should all pause to reflect on what would produce healing that day as opposed to reactivation of our autonomic nervous systems. And, this applies whether one was there, related to someone there, knows someone there, was involved in another school shooting, or is an educator who worries about shootings. And, for the record, this isn't even a complete list of all affected parties.
