I remember watching Hank Aaron break Babe Ruth's home run record on television with my grandfather when I was four years old. It was my first realization of racism as my grandpa explained that Aaron was the best athlete alive, in his opinion, but that he wasn't treated as such by many because he was black. It made no sense to me, a child who was growing up in rural, predominantly white Minnesota but I knew what Aaron had done was a very big deal, by my grandfather's reaction. Bigger than being the best baseball player alive. I am grateful to Henry Louis Aaron for combating racism and changing hearts and minds with his talent and grateful to my grandfather for having a conversation with me that too many parents or grandparents would likely avoid having with a four year old. #perseverance #champion …see more
