It was a pleasure visiting the Hospices De Beaune in the Burgundy region of France today. The story of Chancellor Nicolas Rolin who in 1443 built a beautiful place to care for the poor and sick at no charge really struck me. He didn't cut corners and great thought went into creating a beautiful, compassionate environment for healing. Wealthier patients did pay a small fee and had more private accommodations. Many also freely donated. The church and King Louis also provided funds and nuns cared for the sick. Those funds insured that everyone received care. Nuns even made fresh bread every morning to give to the townspeople who were suffering after the hundred year war. Wine from grapes in the vineyard were sold to fund the hospital. To this day it is a symbol of great pride and compassion in the region. Care and compassion to those who are suffering in a community makes the entire community stronger and more peaceful. People who show up and support one another thrive. What would happen if in America there were smaller, regional models of care like this? Could communities create and find ways to fund care for everyone rich or poor? Would someone be willing to manage it without receiving a seven figure salary? #entrepeneurship #healthcare #business #community
