I am writing a book titled Generation Trauma Goes to School. With the recent shootings in El Paso and Dayton, I was struck by a need to finish the book ASAP. Time is a wasting. Then there were the false alarm traumas — in Times Square and at another mall. Our autonomic nervous systems are on high alert. Finish the book already I said to myself. Then I have been reading about the Boy Scouts (apparently girls can become scouts now) and a deep dark history of undisclosed pedophilia with Scout Masters (and assistants) abusing boys. Not 10 or 20 boys although that would be bad enough. Hundreds. Trauma alert again. Our schools, colleges, workplaces and communities are filled with traumatized adults and children. Yet, we remain remarkably trauma naive. Signal: finish the book already. We need to wake up. Yes, prevention. But for some, prevention is too late. Healing is needed. Educational institutions need to become trauma responsive. That’s my focus but so do workplaces and communities.
