A quick post. Saving a small college (saving anyone or anything) isn’t easy. And it doesn’t always work. But I am not done trying to save Southern Vermont College. The final nail is not in the coffin. And I want a replicable and scalable model given all the small non-elite colleges failing. Yes, the Board withdrew the appeal and everyone in power is focused on closing. A “good” closure is important but it is not a victory. I still have ideas percolating. I am not scared to think boldly and innovatively and I understand risk. Doug Flutie knows about Hail Marys. Many have seen last second three pointers — and guess what, sometimes they win the game. You don’t and can’t count on Hail Marys or three pointers when the clock is at 00.01. So plan accordingly but don’t give up. There is no reason NOT to keep trying. Isn’t that what we teach and preach? Don’t give up. Open new doors. Try. Try again, even in the face of naysayers. At least if you try, you will be able to sleep at night in the coming months and years.
