As I read this article posted below, in addition to my thoughts about the survivor and his courage, I kept thinking about the paramedic -- a veteran. And the vet's skills saved Mr. Mika. For real. And, yet, we make it so so difficult for vets to gain degrees and license in health fields that use their battle won experience. Wouldn't you want this paramedic in your ER? We must do better enabling the transfer of skills from military service to civilian credentials. And, ask: Would the VA hire this paramedic? I think not because he doesn't have the right paper credential. He had the right credentials for Mr. Mika and he has them for me: experience in moments of extraordinary danger.
