You ALL have unofficial recommendations We in HR do that all the time. We get a candidate’s CV and you find out he/she was working with a friend of yours. Why not call that friend to get an unbiased opinion? As a sourcer, you have every right to use any (legal and legitimate) channel to gather information about a candidate. But how much do you professionally trust a friend? How close was this friend to your candidate? What do you do if the process is discret? There’s no wrong or right answer. I treat recommendations like perfume - I enjoy their smell, but I’ll never drink them. The interview process is 5X more important than any recommendation, official or unofficial. Yes, you should get yourself a good set of people who will gladly recommend you.
