Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. The greatest teachers are masters of repetition. Just think of how many times your parents had to tell you the same thing before you really got it. Or pay attention to how great orators periodically repeat a key phrase, almost like the hook or chorus to a great song. (Think of Martin Luther King Jr.’s skilled use of that single phrase: “I have a dream.") Mastering the art of repetition can be challenging, lest you appear stiff or rigid. But while repetition of a key phrase can be powerful, you can also reframe your main points by using expressions like the following: • In other words (or, In essence) . . . • What I’m trying to say is... • Here’s the point (or, Here’s the takeaway) . . . This technique allows you to repeat key points while maintaining variety. It also puts you in control of what your listeners are most likely to remember.
