Convincing someone of a truth is VERY different from motivating them to do something about it. In order to stir others to action, you have to reach them emotionally. Artists are experts at eliciting an emotional response. Think about your favorite actor, dancer, or musician. They appeal to you because of their ability to make you FEEL. They get you to laugh, to cry, to dance when nobody’s looking. Or think back to your school days. Can you remember your favorite teacher or professor? They had that remarkable ability to bring dry facts to life. The stories they told, the personal interest they showed—seeing them was the highlight of your day. Possibly, they played a profound role in shaping who you are today. Although the context in which you seek influence is different, the principles are the same. To have any chance of motivating others to action, you have to stir their emotions.
