If you're trying to persuade or influence, and someone states something that's obviously false, you should definitely correct them immediately, right? Wrong. People are emotionally attached to their beliefs. If you mercilessly expose every flaw in a person's reasoning, they’ll feel attacked. The amygdala will take over, and their focus will no longer be on listening or reasonable discussion; rather, they will defend themselves or attack in return. Instead, focus on learning more about the other person’s viewpoint, as well as the reasons behind their feelings. Then, work to re-establish common ground, with the goal of laying a foundation you can build upon. Above all, strive to leave the conversation on a positive note. Remember that lasting influence takes time. Your goal isn’t to “win the argument” or change someone’s mind in a single discussion. Rather, strive to see the bigger picture.
