How do you even begin to persuade someone who sees the world completely differently than you do? You must provide evidence they're likely to respect. Remember that people differ in background, upbringing, and culture; what one person finds convincing may not work for another. That’s why you must closely examine the arguments of your conversation partner. Ask yourself: • Who influences and inspires them? • What research or sources do they cite? Next, you can seek data and expert opinions from sources they are likely to heed. (Be careful not to misquote or take information out of context, which will erode your credibility.) These efforts are time-consuming and challenging. But it’s a well-spent investment, because it allows you to present evidence in a way that’s more appealing to your partner instead of wasting time on arguments they’re never likely to consider.
