Want others to pay more attention to what you have to say? Start paying attention to them, first. In his timeless book "How to Win Friends and Influence People," Dale Carnegie wrote the following: “If you aspire to be a good conversationalist, be an attentive listener...Remember that the people you are talking to are a hundred times more interested in themselves and their wants and problems than they are in you and your problems.” Carnegie’s advice was valuable when he penned it, but it’s even more relevant today because the rise of modern technology has reduced most attention spans. Go to any restaurant, and you’ll be sure to find a few individuals who can’t resist the urge to check their phones every few minutes, often to the chagrin of their dinner partners. In contrast, when you treat your conversation partner as the most interesting person in the room—curious to hear their thoughts and opinions—you stand out as different.
