Years ago I was in my first role as a manager, and I experienced an exchange I’ll never forget. I chastised a team member—we’ll call him David—for a major blunder. My point was valid, but I surely could have delivered it better. David’s response was quick and cutting: “You know, you’re the kind of manager the rest of us hate.” Ouch. Of course, David could have been more tactful. But there was no use dwelling on that; there was value in this perspective. So, I took a few moments to let my emotions settle, then came back to David. I asked him why he felt the way he did, and learned from his honesty. In the end, it made me a better manager—and it showed David that I wasn’t the jerk that he thought I was.
