Despite many researchers’ preference to abbreviate emotional intelligence as EI in studies and academic journals, the term EQ (shorthand for “emotional intelligence quotient”) has become popular and easily recognizable in multiple languages. This makes sense. In sports, we refer to those who have a superior understanding of the game as having a high IQ (“they have a high basketball or football IQ”), meaning they understand the rules and strategy of the game. This ability isn’t really something that’s measured, but it’s practical and easy to understand. In a similar way, when we speak about a person’s EQ, we mean their ability to understand emotions and how they work. But the value of that knowledge is limited if it can’t be put to use. In other words, true emotional intelligence = EQ, applied. So, how can you build not only your EQ, but your ability to apply that EQ? And, can EQ be measured?
