Need to convince your boss to give you a raise? Try reasoning with empathy. Of course, you COULD go in to your supervisor with guns blazing, detailing your list of accomplishments. You feel this will be extremely convincing. Unbeknownst to you, though, your boss is under fire for being over budget and is willing to do anything to solve this--even downsize the team. Sensing your dissatisfaction, they may decide the easiest option is to cut you. But what if you focused first on getting to know THEIR needs? Through research, you find out their priorities. If you can help them get the department under budget, you're in a much better position to ask for more money. This empathetic approach helps you frame your reasoning to fit your supervisor's perspective, allowing you to brainstorm concrete solutions to their most important problems, which further increases your value in their eyes...
