"What marketing concept do you wish you had invented? Mark Ritson : Net promoter score. Every over-trained marketing academic despises it because it is so simple and is used by pretty much every major company. Its simplicity and its difficulty and its centrality make it fantastic. And because academics hate it, I love it more." …see more

progress compounds. technology change is accelerating. yet, to most, progress in financial services remains elusive. banks are still around, some are very profitable. most startups have failed to disrupt the industry head on. dig deeper to realize change crawls in finserv (because regulation, because regulatory capture), that many banks are structurally unsound , out of touch with younger generations and living off of their legacies. for every JPMorgan, DBS, ING or Goldman, there are thousands of zombies. …see more

We haven't had a killer AR app yet, or glasses stylish enough to make people want to take the plunge. Could a new team-up between Facebook and Ray-Ban buck that trend?

Last week, I tweeted, “Does anyone just want to have a conference call? I’m not sure how much longer I can stare into a camera and pretend not to be multitasking. Just asking.” I was only half kidding. But, seriously: help!

I understand both the desire and the need for our government to get a handle on the issues surrounding data privacy, but think about this… let’s say that the outcome is a broken-up Google and Facebook. And let’s say that this makes way for 50 more companies that use data the way Google and Facebook use it today. Then what? The problem is not how data is being collected. The problem is not collecting data. The problem is how it is used. Specifically, the problem is badly-written laws that prohibit certain kinds of information collection (sex, race, PHI, and other sensitive personal data). Why? Because it forces data scientists to create proxies for these attributes. Algorithms that use proxies (which are assumptions) with substandard or nonexistent feedback loops (to help the AI truly learn from its mistakes) doom the data-driven decision making process to one of the nine circles of hell (though I’m not sure which one). Breaking up data-rich organizations will simply make more versions of the same data-rich organizations. Allowing more small companies to do what the big companies are doing will not change the impact bad data science is already having on our society (a problem not trending in a good direction). …see more

Old-and-New Fangled Ways Help Thwart Suicides These are tricky times for sure, but it seems times have been difficult for awhile for many, if you view suicide rates as a direct expression of ‘difficult times.’ For more than a decade, health officials have watched in vain as suicide rates climbed steadily — by 30 percent nationally since 2000. Doctors have traditionally gauged patients’ risks by looking at past mental health diagnoses and incidents of substance abuse, and by drawing on experience and medical instinct. But doctors and mental health experts can’t crack the code when it comes to identifying which patients are in real danger. Turns out that AI programs explore more factors and allow healthcare professionals to identify more at-risk patients. Very good news indeed. But identify people is only half the equation...the other half—arguably the most critical half—is who is most likely to profit from an intervention...and be open to the help. Reaching people to communicate that they are not alone nor misunderstood, can happen whether the old fashioned ways or new-fangled ways... The critical element is to reach people...using AI and other predictive capabilities certainly can help reach more people and is the finest use of technology that I can contemplate. …see more

Grubhub has a case — after all, they provide a valuable service to restaurants — but it is easy to understand that, from the restaurant’s point of view, the economics simply don’t work. I welcome your thoughts.
