Sometimes, you see unrelated items and they message together. I saw that the Community College of VT is celebrating its 52nd Commencement. The same newsletter noted that the Hermitage might be auctioned off. What a contrast. That got me thinking again of Southern Vermont College, founded in 1926. This will be its 93rd commencement if my math is right. And, I hope it is not its last. I, along with others, am committed to seeing if this remarkable college can celebrate its 100th Commencement! I get the challenges. I get the tightness of the timetable. But, I still believe. Yes. So, don't bury SVC yet. It's funeral may come but not if I can help it. At least my group will go down fighting hard. Very hard. If you don't try and don't believe, I can assure you nothing survives. So, best to try and believe. The other pathways foreshadow doom. And, for the record, doom and lack of transparency aren't my thing. Success is -- and I mean success not in the monetary sense. I mean in helping people become their best selves. That's part of the SVC mission -- enabling people to realize on their potential. How any anyone who believes in the mission NOT fight? …see more

New research out of MIT/Univ of Regina on #fakenews : "People often just don’t think critically enough about the information they encounter... Our research suggests that the solution to politically charged misinformation should involve devoting resources to the spread of accurate information and to training or encouraging people to think more critically. You aren’t doomed to be unreasonable, even in highly politicized times. Just remember that this is also true of people you disagree with." https://lnkd.in/eKEQvjZ …see more

On this Veteran’s Day, I have to wonder why we are not doing all that is possible to save Veterans from committing suicide. Programs and initiatives exist; technology exists. But, we don’t act with all deliberate haste. And each day we wait, over 20 Veterans die. There are approaches, including a very recent study on suicide prevention tied into doctors who see Veterans within the year before death. I am finishing Shulkin’s new book and am deeply struck by how much his vision of his tenure differs from reality. As with many leaders who fail, he has not been able to own his mistakes, at least as of page 215 in the book. Isn’t that tragic too? He tells a tale in the name of Veterans but so far it is a book justifying his own behaviors. Sure, politics is a tough game but the story Shulkin tells seems remarkably self serving. I worry about our saying we are helping when we are really real aggrandizing or self enriching or self promoting. Leaders committed to being in service to others focus on these others. On this Veterans Day, it is good to remember what it means to serve — and we can serve in many ways.... and we can honor service and we can help Veterans when they leave service. That isn’t asking too much. It is the minimum we can provide. …see more

I want to encourage folks to buy books as gifts. They are a gift that keeps on giving. Whether children’s books or adult books, reading brings out the imagination and creativity in us all. Books can transport us — fiction, non-fiction, table tops, children’s stories, poetry..... of course I hope you will buy my books but the point is to encourage the purchase of books and giving away books as gifts. Happy Holidays. …see more

My alma mater Smith is failing its students. The college is not alone. Here’s why: The Smith president sent an email describing with pride their culture of care in reopening. It basically described detailed approaches to physical safety with a couple other things tossed in including reference to race initiatives. Where oh where was any reference to psychological wellbeing of students and trauma they have experienced of late? Shouldn’t they include trauma responsiveness in any proposal related to care? Are Smithies immune somehow from trauma? Where is the effort to add mental health professionals to handle primary, secondary and vicarious trauma? Staff and faculty training? A culture of care cannot ignore mental health. Smith and other institutions are failing to understand how returning to campus will feel amidst a pandemic, racial tension, economic uncertainty, confusion and strife, political division, familial dysfunction (latter happens in elites too). Smith has, yet again, missed the boat. It’s a boat that’s not hard to see. Yipes. …see more

Which matters more, the right culture, or the right tech? I spoke to Richard George about his #adobeexperiencemakerawards win at Refinitiv , and our convo (link in comments) made me wonder. Without a doubt, tech is at the core of their award-winning digital ecosystem. But, it simply isn't the hero of this story. It’s the critical infrastructure that enables innovation. But, what brought that innovation to life, what sustains it, and what facilitated such a remarkable transformation is this organization’s relentless focus on culture. Quoting Richard from our interview: “That was something we were very purposeful about from the get-go. We made sure that people were aligned around a shared purpose, and that they trusted each other to see that vision through.” Check out the link in the comments for key elements of this winning culture, and hear from Richard directly in our full conversation.
