It is not as if our leaders and governance structures are such paradigms of excellence. We can’t be too scared to try something that could be beneficial. As always, comments welcomed. …see more

I published a book of signs from the 2017 Inauguration. It's called Teach Our Children Well. The point was to show signs that represented our values. I pictured the book as a coffee-table reminder. Sadly, the book has new currency with the happening of two things: (1) the detention of children and families; and (2) the resignation of Justice Kennedy and the possible "packing" of the Supreme Court in a way that threatens Roe v. Wade. I worry about all this and I looked at the book. Many of the signs speak to these two identified issues. Get the book. Remember what we value and what matters to us and why fighting peacefully has such enormous power. The book contains this line, which remains sadly true: "Whatever pathways and hurdles we face, we are connected -- as exemplified by these signs --to move forward, to use our individual and collective talents to teach our child and our children's children well." …see more

New piece addressing why money is so hard for people to discuss. It is harder for parents than discussing sex and sexuality. In part this is because, in my view, money is a stand-in for who we are and what we value. As such, it's meaning is vastly more than dollars and cents. …see more

No joke. I was at a car dealership getting my car serviced. It is nearing the end of its lease. All of a sudden I said: I want an orange car. I thought it was because I have been so focused on giraffe. I'll be....I'm trendy without knowing it.

I don’t give up. I intend to keep fighting for SVC. For those jeering, that is your right. There are many pathways to success — we just have to find them. Have a lawyer I want to retain and with whom I’ve been in contact. And for students, faculty, staff, alums and Bennington County, I am in your corner. For real. Southern Vermont College will need to change for sure but it is a college well worth saving. When things get tough, the tough get going. For those who believe in small colleges and the niche they serve, join us or watch. Doom and gloom are not my way. Full moon. Sun in sky. Hope. Continue to donate and let’s save a college. Good mission. Good teamwork. https://lnkd.in/eFrWcY8 PS. I like sports and March Madness. FYI I won bracket for all of Department of Ed in 2012. The then President may remember as will Arne Duncan. That win was part skill and part luck. Remember that. Need both. But we make our luck. …see more
Folks, yesterday saw guilty pleas of a dozen or so wealthy parents and coaches for bribery, illegal money transfers across state lines, and tax fraud among other charges. Felicity issued an apology, seemingly sincere. Here's an idea I want to refloat: When we get to the punishment phase, I want to reiterate the idea of a cy pres award. Elite colleges were harmed. True. But the whole incident shines a spotlight in inequality in education and across America. And, ironically, the bribes ostensibly went to help low income kids. Yup, that's the tax fraud part. So have those pleading guilty do just that: donate to a cy pres fund that benefits low income kids and the non-elite small colleges that serve them. Redistribute the cy pres to colleges with more than 40% Pell eligible students and/or 50% first gen students and under 1200 students and endowments under $10 million. Then use the funds for scholarships and institution sustainability. The cy pres agreement would be part of a court ordered settlement and the distribution could be decided by a cy pres committee or designated court appointed official. Make lemonade out of lemons. Force these parents to do what they actually said: give to help low income students. Do good from bad. …see more
