This product update isn't going to fix Twitter. It's not going to remove any trolls, bots, or armies of maliciously-motivated individuals, but it will make Twitter just a little bit kinder and gentler. Congrats, Twitter team. Nice job!

My alma mater Smith is failing its students. The college is not alone. Here’s why: The Smith president sent an email describing with pride their culture of care in reopening. It basically described detailed approaches to physical safety with a couple other things tossed in including reference to race initiatives. Where oh where was any reference to psychological wellbeing of students and trauma they have experienced of late? Shouldn’t they include trauma responsiveness in any proposal related to care? Are Smithies immune somehow from trauma? Where is the effort to add mental health professionals to handle primary, secondary and vicarious trauma? Staff and faculty training? A culture of care cannot ignore mental health. Smith and other institutions are failing to understand how returning to campus will feel amidst a pandemic, racial tension, economic uncertainty, confusion and strife, political division, familial dysfunction (latter happens in elites too). Smith has, yet again, missed the boat. It’s a boat that’s not hard to see. Yipes. …see more

Please read this and consider how and why we need to do things differently. Time to rethink leadership generally and in higher ed in particular. Don’t be scared off by a new idea. It is not as if our leaders and governance structures are such paradigms of excellence. We can’t be too scared to try something that could be beneficial. As always, comments welcomed. …see more

It was great to work with an outstanding video production team today. I am extremely thankful for our internal Marketing and Communications team and our external video partners, and Leadership supporting the importance of creativity! It was a long 12-hour day off site for our team, but we learned a lot about the “golden hours” for drone shots, the art of creating natural light, the diplomacy of a location pivot, how a paper towel can diffuse too much light, and the importance of humor during a tightly packed schedule. Any good marketing professional knows that spreadsheets are just as important as creative projects. However, it is more important to realize that you may never brag to your kids about the time that you spent 12 hours on a spreadsheet. #thankful #marketing #creative #leadership …see more
