Enjoy this fast-paced conversation (maybe because I set it at 1.3 speed) with Brené Brown and Anne McElvoy of "The Economist" in which she confesses that although she believes in the benefits, meditation makes her "stabby." For Brené Brown meditation is like chastity was for St. Augustine: "Grant me chastity...but not yet." …see more

The ongoing, systemic racism and violence perpetrated agains black Americans on a daily basis has to stop. Add in the terrible, reactionary white fragility and the response by some police departments to their use of excessive force with excessive force, and I am beside myself. Things have to change. Things have to change. Brands like Nike , Netflix , and even the Girl Scouts of the USA are seeing this and reacting appropriately as shown here in Shauna Burbary ’s excellent post. Some of the brands already support initiatives to effect change. My hope is that all of them do. #blacklivesmatter #nike #corporatecitizenship #netflix #girlscouts #dotherightthing …see more

Love that this got labeled a debacle. Folks, remember, Netflix constantly does research and testing to deliver the best experience to their subscribers. So, if you read that a small group is trying a new experience, it has likely already gone through directional feedback from in-person market research and is being vetted in an A/B test. #netflix #consumerresearch #qualitativeresearch #quantitativeresearch #dontfreakout …see more

We are going to look back and wish that sometime in 2019–2020, we put a stake in the ground and declared: “We are humans and we choose humanity.” Think about this.

The video business is not like the television business. TV has two basic business models. You pay (subscription). Someone else pays (advertiser supported). Sometimes, these models are combined. That’s the entire story of TV revenue. Video is another thing entirely. …see more

Interesting move by Target to try and woo some Amazon customers this holiday season. And it will likely entice some of them. But it only addresses the free two-day shipping and ignores all the other value-add services that are bundled with Prime (Prime video, Prime music, etc). #holidays #onlineshopping #retailsales #retailing #marketing #amazon #retail #target #retailstrategy …see more

Facebook is getting into the dating game. Deepfakes are getting better and better. Put them both together and they present a potential reality as sinister as it is deceitful. Imagine online dating in a world replete with deepfakes.

Interesting read from the  Harvard Business Review on when to hire generalists and when to hire specialists. In my experience, I find their conclusions to be accurate. The one thing I would add is that startups almost always hire generalist when starting out then get to specialists as they scale. In a not-terribly-surprising move, Lyft  has acquired Motivate International Inc.  which means they instantly have 80% of bike share rides in the United States. Next up, electric scooters as they and Uber  (who bought Jump Bikes earlier) march toward "owning the last mile" in addition to short car trips. #lastmile #bikes #scooters #electricscooters #uber #lyft #motivate #acquisitions #integrationstrategies #renteverything #membershipeconomy …see more

One of the hallmarks of a well-run company is information sharing. It not only engenders trust but it provides full context for decision making.  Normally, though, that describes information sharing from the top-down and across the company. Reed Hastings  has smartly taken it to the top-up by rethinking how board members interact with senior management at  Netflix . …see more
