Interesting read from the  Harvard Business Review on when to hire generalists and when to hire specialists. In my experience, I find their conclusions to be accurate. The one thing I would add is that startups almost always hire generalist when starting out then get to specialists as they scale. In a not-terribly-surprising move, Lyft  has acquired Motivate International Inc.  which means they instantly have 80% of bike share rides in the United States.
