I used to be a Steve Kerr fan. No longer. Read this piece on Nowitski decision, and Nelson (coach) owned that decision not to play him. Kerr not only deferred all decisions to GM but did not make the hard choice: prohibiting KD from playing. True leaders own their choices good or bad. That’s not easy. If you are a leader and your institution fails and falls into sewer and you have been leader for more than a couple years, you own it ... denial is both unleader-like and disingenuous. Kerr fell in my book; courage and making hard decisions are the hallmarks of real leaders. Sadly, we are seeing too many examples of leadership failure. Bad role models too — in athletics and education. What happened to following the adage that leaders take the blame? Maybe these leaders are working so hard to keep their jobs that they don’t do their jobs. Bad news on all fronts. Wear a sign as a coach or college president or any other leader: the buck stops with me. That’s in case one forgets!!! …see more
This is an important read - and one of the many reasons why I consider Adam Q. to be among the most important voices addressing inclusion in venture capital (and why I am honored and grateful to consider him a friend and mentor).
Thank you LinkedIn for featuring me in you list of #LinkedInTopVoices of 2015! It is an absolute honor!

Consider Role Models and their absence. Consider trauma anniversary webinar at Rutgers Grad School of Social Work on Dec. 9th from 9–noon. Reasonably priced. Registration for CAEOP includes copy of Trauma Doesn’t Stop at the School Door, my new book published by Teachers College Press. Good deal: conference and book.... and one lucky person gets a holiday trauma toolkit from me!!!! Join me for one or both events! …see more
When you go far away, you can think far away thoughts.... this piece is on apologies as I head to Japan.
I wanted to write quickly — more later — on two aspects of the #TSS2020ATN . First, I saw the movie Wrestling Ghosts: powerful, moving, sad, hopeful. It needed a serious debrief afterwards. Lots of ideas that needed processing and Care Room helped but not enough. Second: I think now that we misuse ACE score as a diagnostic tool when it is neither destiny or a personal measure of #health . What it is is actually a gateway into understanding others and oneself. But the number free standing and without more and without context and without PCEs is somewhat misleading. Its power is housed in what it tells us at 10,000 feet and on the ground if used well and understood for what it is and isn’t. That later “isn’t” requires that lots of folks reconsider their use and understanding of ACEs. …see more
I read this headline and thought that one of the current Justices had died and I had missed the news of this person's passing. Phew. No one died. Seems strange to offer up that list today and then to remain silent on Moore. Hum.
As I awoke today and read and listened to the news, I was struck yet again by how difficult the coming months will be. In this time frame, there will be many anniversaries, some of positive events and some of negative events. The latter re-trigger past trauma. That is why we need strategies as individuals and institutions to deal with these anniversaries. Consider the below course at Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work. All welcome — not only our amazing social workers but educators and business owners and HR directors. It is Dec. 9 from 9–noon est. Right priced too. Worth attending even if you can only stay for the first two hours! Concrete usable strategies and approaches provided. “See” you there. It will help as we move forward. …see more
